ESP Control Panel (VSD) | Definition and Key Functions

The ESP control panel is a variable speed drive (VSD) - the surface "station" that runs and protects the downhole ESP motor.

It uses variable frequency drive (VFD) technology for frequency control and motor protection of induction ESP motors (IM - asynchronous) and permanent magnet motors (PMM), at 50/60 Hz for IM and up to about 550 Hz for PMM units.

Operating conditions
Most VSDs / ESP control panels are designed for outdoor operation under conditions regulated by environmental standards (e.g., equivalent to NEMA 3R or IP54 for harsh climates).

Power supply
The VSD is typically powered by a three-phase AC network at 380 V (or 480 V / 600 V depending on the region) at 50/60 Hz.
  • Voltage range: Reliable operation is usually maintained within ±25% of nominal voltage.
  • Low-voltage performance: The VFD typically remains functional even when voltage drops below -50%, though with limits on maximum operating current.
System integration
Power to the ESP motor is supplied from the VSD via a step-up transformer (SUT) - the oil-filled pad transformer that raises VSD output to motor voltage - which is part of the standard surface equipment at the wellsite.

Core functions
The VSD provides comprehensive protection of the ESP system and precise adjustment of operational settings (setpoints). Key monitored parameters include:
  • Overload protection (OL): Prevents motor overheating and mechanical damage.
  • Underload protection (UL): Detects pump gas-lock or broken shafts (loss of load).
  • Frequency regulation: Enables optimization of fluid production by controlling motor RPM.
